It began with a project about designing lighting for public spaces, learning about LED efficiency, engineering, mass production and other technical aspects – with Sedna providing sponsorship and LED products. This ongoing collaboration saw Cardiff Met students join Sedna at Lux Live in November to participate in a Dragons Den competition – with astounding success. Lux Live is the lighting industries biggest UK event, with two days of events and exhibitons at Earl’s Court, London. The Dragons Den competition asked entrepreneurs to pitch their innovative lighting ideas to a panel of seasoned professionals, who included Toby Marlow of Waitrose, Tad Trulski of Light Bureau, Andrew Howis of Speirs and Major, Kevan Shaw of KSLD and Alessandro Targetti of Cree. The six strong student team worked with Sedna on a ‘Frost Light’ product which they pitched to the dragons. Their design brief had been to design a lighting solution for a bar or club – they looked into glowing cupholders and illuminated drinks trays before creating the Frost Light, a colour-changing illuminated frozen bottle stand after deciding LED would look good through ice.Charlotte Price, Nick Evans, Dan Ralph, John Roberts, Tom Murphy and David Rees at Lux Live with their Frost Light. The product was received extremely well– they received an “I’m In” from all five Dragons following some gruelling questions about their design choices and market research – a better response than any of their competitors who were lighting and design professionals and experts in their fields. The students had a great time at the event, they loved meeting all the companies exhibiting, getting expert feedback on their product and learnt a lot from the experience Sedna offered. Sedna and the students are now looking at developing the product further using feedback from the Dragons.
