GVA Lighting’s Highlighter leads Scarborough Mall to a brighter future

Jan. 28, 2013
Date Announced: 28 Jan 2013 Scarborough Town Centers, a 250 store shopping centre located in Toronto’s east end, recently underwent a two-year $62 million dollar renovation to create a modern and fashion-forward shopping destination. With over 425,000 weekly visitors, Scarborough Town Centres will join the ranks with the some of the largest and most eco-friendly malls in Canada. "The biggest things they'll notice is the ceilings and the sky lights," Kathy Meyers, central manager of the Scarborough Town Centre mall.Alongside state-of-the-art skylights, curved ceilings with recessed cove lighting were installed. The new cove lighting features 614 feet of GVA Lighting’s Highlighter™ HL-Cove. The Highlighter™ HL-Cove is GVA’s newest long run modular LED lighting system designed for architectural cove lighting applications with limited power feed points. The HL-Cove was a recent winner of a Gold award in the Innovative Lighting class at 2012 IIDEX Innovation Awards. Using GVA Lighting’s proprietary power and control system, INFINITY™, the HL-Cove can be installed in exceptional long runs of up to 672 feet at 220V with a single power and data feed. The curved cove ceiling project was designed by Hammerschlag + Joffe Inc. and specified by Rutenberg Sales. All components were field installed allowing for easy customization onsite at the mall. Each LED module snaps into the mounting profile, which securely fastens to the mounting surface. Modules were installed and connected end-to-end to create linear runs in the cove ceilings. The forward-looking renovation will help Scarborough lead the way to a brighter future, with energy-saving daylight sensors installed throughout the mall to ensure a comfortable lighting environment for shoppers and employees. A number of eco-friendly changes were made to the mall including a power consumption reduction by 20% despite an increased number of light fixtures and the addition of natural sky lights to harness daylight while creating a balance with the lighting. Scarborough Centre MPP and Ontario Minister of Energy Brad Duguid was on hand at the grand reveal to congratulate the shopping centre on its green initiatives.
