Energy-efficient GE Lighting range saves money for Epping Forest District Council

Jan. 2, 2013
Date Announced: 02 Jan 2013 GE Lighting has been specified by Epping Forest District Council to supply its 600 x 600 recessed Lumination™ LED Luminaires in the phased refurbishment of its Civic Offices. The energy efficiency and advanced performance of the lighting range will result in the Council making significant annual savings on running and maintenance costs.Epping Forest District Council’s Civic Offices were built along the main High Street in Epping during the 1960s. Over the years the original lighting in the building had become increasingly inefficient from both an energy point of view and from a running and maintenance point of view. The general performance of the original lighting had deteriorated and the lighting had also become out-dated in appearance. The Council began a phased programme of refurbishment works to the building, which has involved replacing all the lighting in the offices, corridors and toilets. The latest phase was completed at the end of August and to date two of the three floors in the building have been refurbished. This has involved the installation of new fibreboard ceilings and GE’s Lumination™ LED Luminaires. “We chose the Lumination™ LED Luminaire as it is an extremely low maintenance option with excellent energy saving benefits and has a sleek and modern appearance,” said Richard Spencer, Electrical Engineer at Epping Forest District Council. “Given that the light output of the Lumination™ LED Luminaire is greater than the original lights, we have reduced the number of light fittings needed by one third.”About 100 of the Lumination™ LED Luminaires – each panel measuring 600mm x 600mm – have been installed on each floor of the Council building. The Lumination™ LED Luminaires, which come with a five-year warranty, are available at 50Watts, but to reduce the Council’s running costs, the lights have been dimmed to 19Watts.Richard Spencer said: “By dimming the Lumination™ LED Luminaires we are making an annual saving of approximately 65% on our running costs. In addition, we will benefit from the much longer life of the Lumination™ LED Luminaires, which will cut our general maintenance costs too. We have estimated that our annual maintenance costs will be reduced dramatically, by approximately 75-80%, which will be a significant saving”.The Lumination™ LED Luminaires have also been installed in the building’s toilets circulation areas, however shadows and dark spots can occur in the cubicles and over the washbasins because the recessed panels are not designed to provide direct light. The use of LED spotlights in the cubicles and over sinks eliminates any dark spots there by working seamlessly with the Lumination™ LED Luminaires.Epping Forest District Council would like to upgrade the lighting in its adjoining late 1980s building. If this proves financially viable this phase could begin in April next year. “If this next phase is approved we would like to use the GE Lighting range again as we have been extremely impressed with the Lumination™ LED Luminaires,” said Richard Spencer. “We have also received very positive feedback from staff working in the refurbished offices.”GE LightingGE Lighting invents with the vigor of its founder Thomas Edison to develop energy-efficient solutions that change the way people light their world in commercial, industrial, municipal and residential settings.
