Australian government supports LED streetlight rollout with selection of Sylvania Lighting

Aug. 15, 2013
Date Announced: 15 Aug 2013 In a press release issued August 5, 2013 by the office of the Hon. Chris Hartcher, NSW Minister for Resources and Energy, Sylvania Lighting Australasia Pty Ltd (SLA) has been named as the supplier of LED street lighting to 41 councils on the Ausgrid network. The release stated that councils across Sydney, the Central Coast and Hunter regions of NSW are set to save millions of dollars in maintenance and energy costs under a proposed roll out of LED streetlights.NSW Energy Minister, Chris Hartcher announced 41 local councils would become the first in Australia to be part of a grid-wide roll out of the energy saving technology. The announcement follows the results from trials conducted over the past 18 months which saw LED street lighting installed in locations across Sydney and the Central Coast. Results from the trials showed that electricity use was reduced by up to 70% depending on the type of light that the LED solution replaced; that short term maintenance was minimal and that residents preferred the light output of LEDs to traditional lamp technologies. The Minister went on to state that the LEDs supplied to councils would be assembled and supplied by Sylvania Lighting Australasia.Based on Ausgrid's predictions, Sylvania Lighting will be supplying about 10 000 LEDs a year."When a standard light on a suburban street fails and cannot be fixed, it will now be replaced by a super efficient LED", said Mr. Hartcher. The Ministerial Press Release can be found at: http://www.sla.net.au/news/sylvania-lighting-australasia-named-supplier-led-streetlighting-41-local-councils
