Osram increases Infrared Golden Dragon optical output power by 20%

March 21, 2013
Date Announced: 21 Mar 2013 Higher efficiency at currents of up to 2 amps (A)Traffic intersections, bus stations, parking lots and other public areas require high-performance surveillance systems. With a typical optical output of 650 milliwatts (mW), the new Golden Dragon SFH 4232A infrared LED (IRED) from Osram Opto Semiconductors provides the basis for reliable monitoring and surveillance systems while helping to reduce system costs. Housed in a performance-proven SMT package, it is currently the most powerful IRED in this type of package on the market. At a current of one amp, the efficiency of this high-power component is more than 39 percent. This benefits general applications in process and production control as well as camera-based surveillance applications.Osram’s new SFH 4232A IRED contains the latest generation high-power thinfilm chip that emits infrared light with a wavelength of 850 nanometers (nm). This IRED has a beam angle of +/- 60 degrees and achieves a typical optical output of 650 mW from an operating current of 1 A. This equates to an increase of more than 20 percent compared to its predecessor model (530 mW). The radiant intensity – i.e., the light output within a solid angle – is 210 mW/sr. This higher optical output has been achieved thanks to improved light extraction from the chip. This 1 mm2 chip is optimized for currents up to 2 A making the new Golden Dragon ideal for the infrared illumination required in security applications. Thanks to improved output efficiency, more light can be generated from the same chip surface and fewer components are needed to achieve a particular brightness, resulting in reduced system costs. Using the same number of components as before, the infrared light output will be considerably brighter. Karl Leahy, Director, Infrared Products at Osram Opto Semiconductors, summarized the advantages of the new IRED as follows: “Our customers are provided with a tried and tested product of the same size but with higher output, and they also benefit from lower system costs in their particular applications.”Technical data for IR Golden Dragon SFH 4232A:Dimensions 11 x 6 x 1.8 mmWavelength 850 nmOptical output 650 mW at 1 A / 1.65 VEfficiency 39 % at 1 ARadiant intensity 210 mW/sr at 1 ABeam angle +/- 60 degreesIn its tried and tested package design the Golden Dragon SFH 4232A is currently the most efficient infrared power emitter on the market.Picture: OsramWith its high optical output at currents up to 2 A, the infrared Golden Dragon SFH 4232A is suitable for general safety applications, such as traffic monitoring.Picture: Osramhttp://www.osram-os.com/pr-IR-Golden-DragonABOUT OSRAM OPTO SEMICONDUCTORSOSRAM GmbH of Munich, Germany is one of the two leading light manufacturers in the world.
