Innovation Led launches Sterilize LED UV-C tool in collaboration with university spin-off

Nov. 17, 2020
The box developed to fight the Covid-19 emergency is meant for shops, hotels, restaurants, offices and private houses.

Mezzocorona (Trento), 17 November 2020 - It has the size and weight of a laptop or a small briefcase, uses LED Uvc technology and in just 4 minutes sanitizes all the objects it can contain. This is STERILIZE LED UV-C, a new container, conceived as a tool to help in fighting the Covid-19 virus produced by Innovation Led Trento, the company from Mezzocorona (Trento) specialized in the production of LED lamps for industrial and civil sector, with the collaboration of Light -Cube, a spin-off of the University of Padua.

The purpose of this container is to eliminate the SARS-CoV-2 responsible for COVID from the surface of any object. "Since the beginning of outbreak of Covid, we have asked ourselves what we could do as a company to help fight the pandemic - explains Carlo Dolzan, CEO of Innovation Led-. So we have developed this technology using Uvc LEDs and enclosing it in a small box, that can be used in various sectors such as shops, beauty centers, hotels, restaurants, offices and of course in private houses".

You can insert all kinds of objects inside STERILIZE LED UV-C, including electronic devices such as mobile phones, i-pads, i-pods, as well as other work tools like hairbrushes or scissors for hairdressers, make-up brushes, restaurant menus, etc. The space available is approximately 35 centimeters in length, 32cm in depth and 18cm in height. Once set and switched on, the device will take only 4 minutes to sanitize the object; a sound signal indicates the completion of the treatment. All the components and equipment are entirely produced, assembled and tested in Italy. Innovation Led aims to reach the market by mid-November, with a final price of approximately 150 euro.

"The goal is to give the market a solution to deal with the emergency - adds Dolzan -. We have been working on this project for months, but we have been waiting until now because we wanted to obtain the final report that states the real effectiveness of "STERILIZE" device by the researches of the Department of Molecular Medicine of the University of Padua directed by Professor Andrea Crisanti ".

STERILIZE was developed with the collaboration of Light-Cube, a spin-off of the University of Padua, which designed and prototyped the part related to electronics and lighting. Light Cube implements research, development and design of systems based on optoelectronic technologies. It works with around fifty national and international companies, providing them technology in the field of lighting.

The collaboration between Light-Cube and Innovation Led started in 2013 - explains Nicola Trivellin, University Researcher at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Founder in 2011 of Light-Cube -. Over the years, Light-Cube's contribution has focused on energy efficiency of industrial and professional lighting. But Covid has change everything and the lockdown has made us think about how to use LED technology to break down the viral load on objects’ surfaces".

The university spin-off developed an optical study to use ultraviolet radiation type C (UVC), able of damaging the virus DNA, in the best possible ways regarding the irradiance (i.e. the power per square centimeter). Thanks to the UV-C LED technology we can have a sanitizing action without using highly polluting products such as low pressure mercury lamps; LED products also guarantee immediate emission upon ignition, unlike traditional lamps which require a certain ignition and stabilization time.

In just two months - continues Trivellin - we were able to create a box of about the size of an A4 sheet that allows a reduction of 99.99% SARS-CoV-2 in only a few minutes. The advantage compared with other sanitizing tools is that STERILIZE can be used for any object, even electronic devices; that the sanitation operation is immediate and it doesn’t need a specialized operator; that energy consumption is very low: with only one euro it is possible to carry out more than 20 thousand sterilizations”.

Innovation Led Trento has about ten employees and collaborators and an annual revenue of around two million euros. The CEO Carlo Dolzan is highly renowned for his more than 30 years experience on the national and international market in the field of lighting and in the field of energy saving.
