Thrall, TX High School business teacher Bob Haisler had a vision of illuminating the Thrall city water tower, and realized it would also provide an excellent educational experience for his students. His Thrall High School R.E.A.L. Club (Relevant Experience in Administrative Leadership) year-long project was completed in September 2019. The students presented their lighting proposal to the Thrall ISD School Board and the Thrall City Council to gain resolutions of approval. Once receiving approvals, the next step was acquiring the proper lighting equipment and project funding. After Mr. Haisler was referred to LightParts Inc. in Austin, Texas, Robert Mokry of LightParts suggested Acclaim Lighting Dyna Drum EO fixtures and an Acclaim Canvas control system for the project. LightParts and Acclaim provided demo equipment for a mockup/demo, along with a quote for the lighting equipment and programming. The student’s next task was to secure funding for the project. After receiving a grant from an education resource system, an in-kind donation of all electrical work, and the support of local donors, the project was fully funded. LightParts’ Chris King programmed the Canvas controller to provide various colors and chases suitable for multiple events. Programs are recalled by the Canvas iPhone app, making choices a snap.
Robert Mokry of LightParts said, “The Spirit Tower has gained much popularity from the Thrall community and surrounding areas. It’s one of the most satisfying projects we’ve had the pleasure of working on. Bob Haisler, his R.E.A.L Club students and the citizens of Thrall are fired up about the results. It’s truly gratifying”.
