The new LEDs deliver high efficacy circadian lighting, replication of natural light and a game changing dual-colour temperature LED on single emitter to shrink optics and optimise tuning performance.
Tokushima, Japan – 14 January 2020: At Light + Building 2020 held in Frankfurt, Nichia – the leader in high-performance LED solutions – reveals it will present at least three complementary technologies to improve the delivery of light quality under an over-arching banner of ‘Light so Good’.
Vitasolis™ technology incorporates a new LED family that enables users to benefit from the energy savings of LED and the advantages of human-centric lighting (HCL). While standard LEDs struggle to provide a strong cyan component in their spectrum as this comes at a cost in terms of luminous efficacy, Vitasolis uses a special blend of phosphors to increase cyan in the resulting natural white light. This facilitates a better regulation of the body’s clock to improve motivation and productivity, without losing efficacy. The solution also delivers a crisper white and a wider-wavelength spectrum to deliver more comfortable illumination.
For fixture manufacturers, Vitasolis offers further benefits including backwards-compatibility with other LED product families, such as Nichia’s 757 series, the industry’s leading 3030 package. This means Vitasolis can be easily and quickly deployed in existing designs as a replacement for other LEDs, without any changes in power, driver compatibility, beam shape or safety testing. There is no need to adapt or redesign fixtures – just swap the standard 3030 LED for a Vitasolis LED. This is a unique benefit, which translates into quicker production and shorter time-to-market for human-centric solutions.
At Light + Building 2020, Nichia also plans to demonstrate Optisolis™, the world’s first series of packaged LEDs and chip-on-board (COB) solutions that accurately mimic natural light sources without producing any harmful ultraviolet (UV) light. Optisolis not only shows objects in a more vivid and impactful way, it also preserves them at their best, helping prevent degradation of things like artworks, printed materials and textiles.
Designed to replace halogen and conventional LED in directional lighting applications, the natural colour rendering performance delivered by Optisolis technology allows visitors to fully appreciate the high fidelity of light surrounding them. The exceptional colour rendering index (CRI) value of over 98 at full intensity also delivers an R9 red content (a key saturated solid colour not counted in Ra) of over 94. Nichia does not ignore the other R indices either, with Optisolis being the first LED to guarantee a minimum value for R10 – R15. Finally, Optisolis delivers a greater value in lumens per watt, resulting in significant energy savings.
Furthermore, Nichia will showcase its first 2-in-1 tunable white, single light-emitting surface (LES), mid-power 3030 LED. The solution enables luminaire manufacturers to improve colour tuning, shrink optics and fixture profiles, open up creative design possibilities and potentially improve operational SKU management.
Nichia’s 2-in-1 LED technology also allows for higher colour quality, in some cases up to ~90 CRI, in the popular CCT regions as a standard. It also delivers elegant colour tuning and mixing all within a single LES to provide easier integration into edge-lit waveguides. Currently, luminaire manufacturers must use two LEDs in parallel to achieve colour tuning, which creates unwanted optical distributions and visual effects while also limiting the lumen output that can be achieved in a single luminaire.
Dr Ulf Meiners, Managing Director at Nichia Germany, said: ‘Using proprietary technologies and expertise in developing blue emitters and high-quality phosphors, Nichia’s trio of complementary lighting technologies – Vitasolis, Optisolis and the 2-in-1 series of LEDs – is set to raise the bar in delivering light quality without sacrificing energy efficiency. Whether it’s bringing vitality to work and leisure spaces or ensuring valuable objects are appreciated and preserved, the offer from Nichia empowers fixture manufacturers to enhance the world with high-fidelity light.’

About NICHIA Corporation
Having ‘Ever Researching for a Brighter World’ as a motto, NICHIA takes great pride in being the technology leader and world’s largest LED manufacturer. Founded in 1956 as a specialist chemical producer, NICHIA quickly became the leader in luminescent materials (phosphors). Nichia later developed and commercialised the first high brightness blue LED in 1993 and the first white LED in 1996. Additional nitride-based LEDs in various colours were developed, including ultraviolet and visible laser diodes. NICHIA believes that its products will remain at the forefront of energy efficient solutions throughout the world for years to come.
NICHIA will continue to be a company that makes contributions to the world by evolving its original and unique technologies and ‘Ever Researching for a Brighter World’.
