EnergyAustralia maintains a population of about 250,000 street lights on behalf of 41 Local Councils in the Sydney, Central Coast and Hunter regions of NSW. A total of 160,000 street lights fall under the P4 and P5 lighting category.
Respondents should be aware that there are marked differences in the Australian road lighting standards for residential roads (AS/NZS 1158.3.1) as compared to lighting standards in other countries. In particular, minimum maintained lighting levels on residential roads are as little as one-fifth that of some international standards. Luminaire spacing are much larger than typical in other parts of the world.
Respondents should also be aware that there is considerable interest in LED road lighting technology in Australia from both a large number of local governments and the fourteen other Australian electricity-distribution companies who collectively manage close to two million street lights.
