Strategies in Light China announces conference program

Feb. 15, 2011
The first Strategies in Light event to be held in the Greater China region is entitled “East Meets West: Expanding the Global Market for LEDs and SSL.”
Strategies Unlimited and PennWell Corporation have announced that the first annual Strategies in Light China Conference and Expo will be held at the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel in Kowloon, Hong Kong on May 10-12, 2011.

Strategies in Light events have been held on the subject of LED markets, applications and industry in the US since 2000, in Japan since 2008, and in Europe since 2010. This will be the first Strategies in Light event to be held in the Greater China region. In addition to the conference sessions, more than 30 exhibitors will be showing their LED components, systems, instruments and related technologies in the exhibit area.

Unlike most of the other LED/SSL conferences held in China, the goal for SIL China is to be very international in scope, with roughly 50% participation (speakers and attendees) from greater China and 50% from other world regions. The Hong Kong venue will provide easy access for foreign attendees as well as for mainland Chinese participants. All conference presentations will have simultaneous translation between Chinese and English.

Strategies in Light China will explore the latest developments in LED markets, technology, and emerging applications, including an HB LED market update and forecast from Strategies Unlimited. The conference will focus on the LED industry supply chain, which results in products such as LED lighting fixtures and replacement lamps; automotive lighting; LED outdoor displays; backlighting for LCD displays in TVs, monitors, laptops and mobile devices, among others.

Discussions will cover LED systems and end products, LED outdoor lighting, and LED market trends in China. Speakers will address issues such as critical challenges and barriers to LED lighting adoption; regulatory issues and standards; government support and funding; technology updates and roadmaps; financing; investment and trade issues, and the international competitive landscape.

The keynote speaker BJ Lee, Chairman of the Board, Epistar Corporation, will address the status and outlook for the LED industry in Greater China.

Other featured speakers include: Alfred Felder, president and CEO, Osram Opto Semiconductors Asia, Ltd.; Xiao Fei (Jack) Zhang, CEO, Gaogong LED Institute; Piet Derks, Senior Director and General Manager, Lighting R&D China, Philips Lighting; and Enboa Wu, Vice President and Group Director, Materials and Packaging Technology Group, Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI).

In addition to the regular conference sessions, two half-day pre-conference workshops will be held on May 10 entitled “Standards for Solid-State Lighting” and “Test, Measurement and Certification Procedures for Qualification of SSL Products for the International Market.” These workshops will be led by Jianzhong Jiao of Osram Opto Semiconductors, and Paul Nie of HaoLED, respectively.
