MaxLite Merak LED tunnel lights' 118,000-hr lifetime minimizes tunnel and underpass maintenance

WEST CALDWELL, N.J. – A safe tunnel is a well-lit tunnel. With this in mind, MaxLite launches Merak LED Tunnel Lights, designed to maximize safety while minimizing energy costs and maintenance disruptions for tunnel operators.

The continuous, high light levels required in tunnels is costly; every 1000 watts used costs $1000* in energy per year. Capable of replacing 175-watt to 1000-watt high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, the Merak LED Tunnel fixtures provide energy savings of up to 70 percent. In addition, the LEDs have a long, 118,000-hour L70 lifetime to keep maintenance operations and tunnel closures to a minimum.

Available in a wide range of wattages that reach up to 300W, the Merak Tunnel LED fixture was specifically designed for tunnel and underpass lighting applications that require a quality fixture capable of delivering the high lumens to meet RP-22-11, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America’s tunnel lighting standard. The largest model delivers in excess of 27,000 lumens, and all fixtures exceed 90 lumens per watt in efficacy. Merak LED Tunnel Lights distribute light in a specialized combination of symmetrical and asymmetrical patterns that reduce glare and improve visibility and eye comfort for motorists moving at high speeds. “With transitional lighting levels and daytime and nighttime operating conditions to consider, tunnel and underpass lighting presents a unique set of challenges to specifiers,” said Product Manager Francisco Garza. “Our goal with the Merak LED Tunnel family of fixtures is to provide high-quality, reliable lighting that creates a safe environment for traffic while reducing energy consumption. The LEDs provide uniform illumination with a color-rendering index (CRI) greater than 70 for a superior light that is sustainable and improves the driving experience.” Merak LED Tunnel lights are constructed with a shock- and vibration-resistant aluminum body that operates as a built-in chimney for heat dissipation and efficient thermal management. They are designed to operate in a wide temperature and humidity range and are suitable for use in tunnels, underpasses, covered car parks and other public and industrial area applications. The fixtures include a 10Kv surge protector to ensure fixture longevity and eliminate downtime caused by storms or lightning strikes. Unlike high-pressure sodium lamps, which have a restrike delay, the LED light source turns on instantly following a power outage. The fixtures can be quickly installed, and include an adjustable mounting bracket for a precise, secure installation. Connectors allow for easy maintenance of the fixture. Backed by a limited five-year warranty, Merak LED Tunnel Lights operate on universal 120-277 voltage; 347-480v is also available.
