With the Government committed to reducing the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% (from the 1990 baseline) by 2050, energy efficient lighting and the public sector is a hot topic at the moment. There are huge cost saving to be made in this area, as well as the obvious environmental benefits. One study estimates that if all the lighting in the UK was replaced by energy efficient luminaires, we would save enough energy to light the streets of a city the size of Milton Keynes for 632 million years. However, converting to energy efficient lighting comes with certain challenges. Will the energy saving offset the cost of replacing a lighting scheme? Can LED-based street lanterns light road schemes as well as the more tried and tested technologies? Are there specific advantages to using LED luminaires (as opposed to incandescent sources) when it comes to illuminating and preserving our cultural heritage? Photometric Testing, in association with test equipment specialists Konica Minolta and Pro Lite Technology will host a seminar on Lighting and the Public Sector at Leeds Royal Armouries Museum to consider these questions and provide guidance on the selection, specification, testing and installation of energy efficient lighting schemes for public sector applications.
