Cooper Lighting and Rambus have signed a licensing agreement that will allow Cooper to gain access to Rambus’ patented innovations for LED-based edge-lit lighting technology (view press release). Cooper says that it will use the technology to develop LED-based lighting fixtures for commercial, industrial and utility markets.
Jeff Parker, president of the Lighting and Display Technology business at Rambus, said that the two companies “can create an exciting new generation of advanced LED-based lighting products with unique form factors that are cost-competitive and energy efficient.”
After acquiring edge-lit technology from Global Lighting Technologies, Rambus has provided licenses to several companies including GE Lighting and UK-based Fern-Howard.
GE Lighting unveils new organization
GE Lighting has combined all of its lighting technologies in its commercial and industrial product portfolio into a new organization named North America Professional Solutions (view press release). Previously, GE's LED and non-LED sales organizations were separate functions.
The new organization will be led by Jaime Irick, who was previously in charge of GE Lighting Solutions, which was GE's LED and lighting fixtures business.
GE Lighting President & CEO Maryrose Sylvester said: "LED activation is accelerating across North America and globally. With the realignment, we are positioning ourselves to lead in this shift and assist our customers as their 'trusted advisor' as they prepare to make critical short- and long-term decisions during this period of technical and industry transformation."
Holt joins LBT board
Vancouver, Canada-based Light-Based Technologies (LBT) has appointed Michael Holt, former CEO of Philips Lumileds Lighting, to its board of directors (view press release). LBT develops intelligent power and control electronics for SSL applications.
“It is exciting to once again be involved with an early stage, disruptive technology,” said Holt. “I believe that intelligent control and increasing functionality will become important differentiators in the lighting industry, and LBT has the vision and capability to enable its customers in this regard.”
Kaj den Daas joins Lighting Science board
LED lamp manufacturer Lighting Science Group (OTCBB: LSCG) says that KR (Kaj) den Daas, a former senior executive with Philips, will be joining the company's board of directors (view press release).
Den Daas is a former chairman of Philips Lighting North America and CEO of BU Professional Luminaires North America. In recent years he has worked with companies including as iWatt, Luxim, Glo AB and NVC Lighting.
Soraa expands executive team
Soraa, developer of GaN-on-GaN LED technology, has added two executives to its leadership team. Tom Caulfield has assumed the position of chief operating officer and Ray Letasi joins Soraa as VP of global sales (view press release).
Caulfield has held numerous executive positions in publicly traded and private companies including serving as COO of Ausra, Inc. He has also worked at Novellus Systems, Inc. and IBM. Letasi is the former president and COO of EcoSense Lighting, and is a veteran of Color Kinetics, now part of Philips.
Soraa recently launched its Vivid LED MR16 lamp, which is designed to replace standard 40 to 50W MR16 halogen lamps and is available in 2700K and 3000K correlated color temperatures. It has a color-rendering index (CRI) of 95 and R9 of 90.
