Once Innovations, Inc., an LED lighting developer based in Plymouth, MN, and Japan-based LED maker Citizen Electronics Co., Ltd. have entered into an LED license agreement. Citizen will gain access to part of the Once IP portfolio related to AC-LED conditioning technologies and color-temperature shift control for dimmable AC-LED lighting.
Once recently reported AC-LED modules with a power factor over 0.98, total harmonic distortion under 20%, and system luminous efficacies exceeding 90 lm/W.
Space Cannon files for liquidation
Space Cannon VH SRL, an Italy-based lighting manufacturer and a member of the Zumtobel Group, has filed for liquidation, and operations will be discontinued. Space Cannon was acquired by the Zumtobel Group in the spring of 2008, and had annual sales of around EUR 7 million.
However, Zumtobel says the acquired product portfolio has failed to comply with international norms and standards. This was not known at the time of the acquisition, and Zumtobel says it was "forced to admit that [Space Cannon] is no longer viable. We have therefore decided to make no further funds available to Space Cannon."
Kyma acquires IP rights from The Fox Group
Kyma Technologies, a Raleigh, NC-based supplier of crystalline gallium nitride (GaN) and aluminum nitride (AlN) materials, has acquired assets and intellectual property (IP) rights from The Fox Group. The assets and IP rights relate to light-emitting semiconductor materials and devices, and the hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) process for depositing nitride-based semiconductor materials.
Kyma expects the acquired resources to accelerate Kyma’s advances in materials and processes, in both contract R&D and product development. “Fox engineers were able to produce certain (Al,Ga)N structures and certain p- and n-doped layers that are of immediate interest to both our current HVPE products and our new product development plans,” added Edward Preble, Kyma CTO and VP of Business Development.
Clean-energy award for Barefoot Power
Barefoot Power, which supplies solar-charged LED lights and electrical products to the rural poor, was one of two winners selected by an international panel of judges as winners of the Clean Energy Financing Award 2010, organized by the Climate Technology Initiative’s Private Financing Advisory Network (CTI PFAN).
The award was presented in front of financiers, clean-energy experts and representatives of financial institutions from across Africa and overseas, who were participating at the CTI PFAN Africa Forum for Clean Energy Financing (AFRICEF) in Johannesburg.
