Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) on March 24 completed building a 115-kV transmission line that runs six miles between the Rolling Hills and Hastings substations in Amarillo, Texas, in order to boost reliability in north Amarillo, a spokesperson for Xcel Energy (NYSE:XEL) told TransmissionHub on March 26.
“It provides us with more options to restore service, if there is an outage on another part of the local network,” the spokesperson said.
The Rolling Hills to Hastings line was approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Texas on Dec. 15, 2011. The 115-kV line was constructed as a single circuit on double-circuit poles. The single steel poles are between 80 and 100 feet tall and separated by 500 to 800 feet. Total construction costs were $21.3m.
The Rolling Hills and Hastings transmission line, along with other projects in Amarillo, will help to prevent and decrease outages on the network by providing alternate routes for power to transmit to consumers, according to a March 24 statement.
The Amarillo projects were ordered as a necessary step to improve reliability in a 2010 study by the Southwest Power Pool, the regional transmission organization that reviews and coordinates transmission reliability in parts of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri., and Louisiana.
The first line in the Amarillo project consists of 20 miles of 230-kV lines, connects the Amarillo South substation to the Randall County substation, both located in south Amarillo. Construction was completed in March 2013 and lines were energized in April 2013.
The Rolling Hills and Hastings line, located in north Amarillo, was the second in the project to be completed. It will be in service by the end of April, according to the spokesperson.
“The third 115-kV line will be built in northeast Amarillo ... between the Hastings Substation and East Plant Substation ... in [mid] 2015,” the spokesperson said. The mileage of the line is still being finalized.
The Rolling Hills and Hastings line and the others will help improve the capacity of the system by meeting the increasing customer demands in Amarillo, Texas.
