Gleaming white: Osram presents Ostar Lighting and Golden Dragon

April 21, 2006
Date Announced: 21 Apr 2006 Osram will be showcasing white LEDs for general lighting at the Light & Building fair which takes place in Frankfurt from April 23 to 27, 2006. For the first time, visitors will be able to see Ostar Lighting in its full glory. Like a powerful spotlight it concentrates its incredibly bright light on a small area. The somewhat smaller Golden Dragon provides light in three different shades of white. With colour temperatures of 3250 K (warm white), 4200 K (neutral white) and 5600 K (daylight white) it can be used for a wide range of applications.OstarSix chips give Ostar Lighting a brilliant presence. It achieves 420 lm (28 lm/W) with a lens and 300 lm (20 lm/W) without a lens, in each case at an operating current of 700 mA. With a lens, this high-power light emitting diode is brighter than a 20 W halogen lamp but takes up much less space. Its hexagonal shape allows for high packing densities and enables multiple LEDs to be combined like a mosaic to create large areas of light or patterns of flexible design. The possibilities are limited only by the de-signer’s imagination. Ostar is simply mounted with screws or clamps. The power cables can soldered on or connected by clips.Golden DragonWith its three different shades of white, which can even be combined in a single light source, the Golden Dragon can provide almost any white light colour. It can therefore be used in a very wide range of applications, from starlight ceilings and lighting with excellent colour rendering for shop window displays to cabinet and picture lighting in museums. Thanks to the optimised heat dissipation of the SMT package there is no thermal stress on the illuminated objects. In all three shades of white the Golden Dragon is based on ThinGaN chips (indium-gallium-nitride material system). It achieves a typical luminous efficacy of 40 lm/W in the daylight white colour, 36 lm/W in neutral white and 32 lm/W in warm white, in each case with an operating current of 350 mA. These LEDs last more than 50,000 hours. If operated at a maximum operating current of 500 mA, the luminous flux values are 64 lm for daylight white, 58 lm for neutral white and 47 lm for warm white.
