Compact, efficient step-up converter from MPS drives LEDs

Nov. 29, 2005
Date Announced: 29 Nov 2005 LOS GATOS, Calif.-- Nov. 28, 2005 -- Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) (Nasdaq:MPWR) a leading fabless manufacturer of high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors announces the immediate availability of the MP1529. This high efficiency, single inductor step-up converter powers three LED strings for flash, LCD backlight and keypad backlight from a single Lithium-Ion or three cell alkaline battery supply, making it an ideal LED driver solution for next generation portable electronics. The MP1529 drives up to 30mA into two similar strings, each comprised of up to six white LEDs for LCD backlighting or as many as 10 color LEDs for keypad backlighting. The 150mA third string can consist of up to four white LEDs suitable for a high power white LED camera flash application. Additionally, the single inductor architecture of the MP1529 and high 1.2MHz switching frequency combine to minimize solution size. This MP1529 incorporates a 1.2A power FET to support operation in four modes: shutdown, backlight, preview, and flash with the latter two modes targeted specifically at digital camera functionality. The backlight mode illuminates the two 30mA backlight strings. In preview mode the two backlight strings remain lit while the flash string is illuminated to allow for verification of composition and exposure of the shot. In flash mode, power for the two backlight strings is diverted to the flash string. In shutdown, quiescent current drops to 0.5uA. Current levels for backlight, preview and flash mode are set with the use of three external resistors. The two backlight LED strings may be dimmed by applying a PWM signal to the device. A two-pin digital enable interface selects between the four modes of operation. Targeted at highly compact portable applications such as PDAs and cell phones, the MP1529 is available in a tiny QFN16 package. Built-in protection features include: under-voltage lockout; open circuit over-voltage protection; cycle-by-cycle current limit; integrated soft-start and thermal shutdown. Pricing for the MP1529 begins at $2.26 in 1,000 piece quantities. About Monolithic Power Monolithic Power Systems, Inc.
