Design LED develops thin and flexible LED backlight

July 25, 2005
Date Announced: 25 Jul 2005 Design LED Products Ltd in the UK has developed a thin and flexible LED backlight technology for applications requiring a flexible, conformal or curved light source. The lambertian backlights are ~1mm thick and can be bent over 5mm over 40mm distrances. The side emitting LEDs are integrated into the backlight module. Custom designs can be quickly prototyped with no expensive tooling costs and the transfer to volume manufacture, quickly achieved."We see a great opportunity for this technology being used in small flexible display lightings applications or in applications where a curved or 3d light source is required. This technology can be a direct replacement for electroluminescent films in many circumstances," said James Gourlay, Technical Director of Design LED. About Design LEDDesign LED is a light-guide design and manufacturing company. With our unique and patented, patterned light-guide technology in conjunction with conventional Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs), we can make thin, flexible and patterned light-sources.This technology can enable thin and mechanically flexible or 3-d formed, backlights or low resolution displays which can provide a low voltage, brighter, more reliable and more functional alternative to electroluminescent films for many applications. Our first products are in small Point-of-Sale applications, giving eye-catching lighting/animation-effects to customer brand graphics. We also have brand and product enhancement products for OEM applications. Our product roadmap is to provide brand and product enhancement through use of our light-guide technology into a wide range of electronic product market sectors. Our technology roadmap is to further industrialise our conventioanl packaged LED based process and to develop bare-die based processes, for further reduction in product thickness to enable thin "Illuminated Canvas" products. To help achieve our technology roadmap goals and support our product roadmaps, we are interested in discussing collaboration with institutes or companies.Design LED's business headquarters is located in Glasgow at the Hillington Innovation Centre. It also also has a development facility for product design and test in the Photonix building on the West of Scotland Science Park in the north of the city.
