Optek's super-flux square LEDs provide color for displays

June 30, 2005
Date Announced: 30 Jun 2005 Giving display manufacturers a high power solid-state alternative to neon for outdoor and indoor signage applications, TT electronics OPTEK Technology offers a family of four-pin high-flux LEDs in a wide spectrum of colors and multiple viewing angles. Designated the OVF Series, these high current “Super-Flux” LEDs are available in white, blue, green, amber, red/orange and red in 7.6mm2 four-pin through-hole packages with water clear lenses that provide viewing angles from 40 to 120 degrees. “These high power LEDs can be used in arrays or mounted in housings for a variety of display and signage applications, including replacing traditional neon,” explained Richard Saffa, vice president of the visible LED business unit for OPTEK. “With their higher current operation, the four-pin packages enable designers to use fewer LEDs in their arrays to achieve the same light output.”According to Saffa, the OVF Series LEDs are finding wide acceptance in applications such as outdoor signage and displays, such as scoreboards and large-area electronic billboards; traffic signals and highway signage; as well as in exterior automotive lighting applications such as tail lights, turn indicators and brake lights. The OVFS Series LEDs are available in blue (470nm InGaN), with a typical luminous flux of 850mlm (millilumens) measured at forward current of 30mA and a viewing angle of 60°; green (525nm InGaN) with a typical flux of 2500mlm @ 30mA, 60°; amber (591nm AlInGaP) 5000mlm @ 70mA, 90°; red/orange (618nm AlInGaP) 4500mlm @70mA, 40°; red (624nm AlInGaP ) 4500mlm @70mA, 90°. The OVFS white LEDs (InGaN) exhibit a typical flux of 1200mlm @ 30mA with a viewing angle of 60°.The OVFT Series LEDs are available in blue (470nm InGaN), with a typical luminous flux of 360mlm @ 20mA and a viewing angle of 120°; green (525nm InGaN) with a typical flux of 960mlm @ 20mA, 120°; yellow (589nm AlInGaP) 3360mlm @ 70mA, 120°; red/orange (618nm AlInGaP) 3360mlm @70mA, 120°; red (624nm AlInGaP) 3000mlm @70mA, 120°. The OVFT white LEDs (InGaN) exhibit a typical flux of 600mlm @ 20mA with a viewing angle of 120°.All the OVF Series LEDs are rated for operation between -40°C and +100°C and are compatible with lead-free soldering processes. The OVF Series “Super-Flux” LEDs are priced starting at $0.21 each in quantities of 10,000, with lead times from stock to 8 weeks.
