Micrel announces new 2 x 2 mm PWM boost regulator

Nov. 30, 2004
Date Announced: 30 Nov 2004 Micrel has launched the MIC2295, a high power density DC/DC boost converter featuring up to 34V output voltage capability and more than 1.2A of input switch current for powering hefty loads. The IC is aimed at organic EL displays, LCD displays, and Photo Flash LEDs in a wide variety of handheld applications. The chip is currently sampling with volume quantities available within 12 weeks. Pricing starts at $1.31 in 1K quantity. Pb-free options are also available. The MIC2295 boasts 20 percent higher current capability compared to its predecessor, the MIC2288. "The MIC2295 allows more output power in a smaller area than competing boost regulator solutions," said Tony O'Brien, Micrel's director of marketing, power products. "The high power density is a result of Micrel's advanced in-house analog power process, as well as our leadership in advanced packaging technologies." The new regulator can step up input voltages from 2.5V to 10V to generate an output voltage up to 34V. A proprietary internal compensation technique allows the output capacitor to shrink by more than 50 percent; from 4.7uF to 2.2uF. The IC offers output over voltage protection, <1 percent line and load regulation, 1uA shutdown current, and a wide ?40C to +125C junction temperature range. The MIC2295 is available in 2mm x 2mm MLF-8L and low-profile thin SOT23-5L package options. "Competing boost regulator solutions offer lower current capability in SOT23 packages that are twice the size of the 2mm x 2mm MLF," said Bob Whelton, executive vice president, Micrel. "The MIC2295 supports Micrel's product objectives of providing customers with highly efficient IC solutions in tiny, board saving packaging." Micrel Inc., is a leading manufacturer of advanced, high performance communications, clock management, Ethernet switch and physical layer transceiver, mixed signal, analog and power ICs.
