Overview:

There are many ways to gain knowledge about the design and performance of LED-based solid-state lighting (SSL) products, but one method is both very informative and relatively affordable – tearing down LED retrofit lamps and examining firsthand the design approach and how the lamps perform optically, electronically, and thermally. Lighting industry guru Steve Paolini, CTO of Next Lighting and founder of Telelumen, will present the results of teardowns that he has performed on a number of popular LED lamps. The presentation will include an explanation of a methodology that product developers and lighting designers/specifiers can employ in their own LED-based product design, or SSL projects, to realize optimal results. Moreover attendees will get the inside story on the architectural approaches to SSL that work, and those that don’t.

The LEDs Magazine Webcast on lamp teardowns will be instructive for both product designers working on SSL designs and lighting specifiers that need to understand the intricacies of how LED lamps work to guide their practice. Retrofit lamps present a decidedly difficult design challenge give the inherent space limitations and the fact that LED point sources are completely different from a filament. Moreover specifiers must be able to critically evaluate lamp designs to make the best choice for any given project.
