New lighting technology offers extreme environmental benefits, but not just in the resulting energy savings. In the design process, the opportunity exists to create a more sustainable lighting plan for an entire project. Berrigan, principal of Derry Berrigan Lighting Design, is passionate regarding this subject and has been recognized for her efforts on many projects. In her address, she will explain her history in this movement and the path she has taken, and highlight some of the key projects that have established her reputation.
The annual LEDiscovery event shares lessons learned and best practices, as well as technical and practical application information about LED and solid-state lighting (SSL) with the purpose of educating current and potential commercial purchasers and specifiers of the technology, such as engineers, lighting designers, facility & property managers, the lighting industry as a whole and students. Usually held in the spring, LEDiscovery moved it date this year to co-locate with IIDEX/NeoCon and Light Canada, along with the Green Building Festival which runs from September 2nd to 25th, all at Toronto’s Direct Energy Centre.
The day-long workshop event – sponsored by CRS Electronics / ICE Lighting, Ruud Lighting Canada and Tempo Industries – will feature a morning project-based session entitled “Specify This! Outdoor and Area LED Lighting Advancement and Procurement Best Practices.” Presenters are Mark Bettin of Chicago’s merchandise Mart, Bryan Purcell of the Toronto Atmospheric Fund’s Toronto based LightSavers and Philip Jessup of The Climate Group’s Global LightSavers Program. Results from both indoor and outdoor programs and projects will be illuminated.
The afternoon session, entitled “From Concept to Completion: Solid-state Lighting R&D and Intellectual Property,” will be presented by Dr. Venkat Venkataramanan from the SSLNet of the University of Toronto and Morgan Pattison of SSL Inc., a contractor to the US Department of Energy, responsible for the development of LED technology forecasting and planning.
Light Canada
On September 23rd, Light Canada will open its doors for 2 days with over 100 lighting-related exhibitors, most now with a focus on LED, as well as a two-day conference packed with great speakers and information.
IIDEX/NeoCon Canada in partnership with the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), Toronto Section will showcase the latest in interior, exterior, commercial and architectural lighting products plus lamps and lighting controls in 5,000 square feet of exposition space. With over 100 Canadian and international exhibitors, Light Canada delivers not only cutting edge design solutions, but will also showcase the monumental advances in sustainable lighting, LED technology, new materials and advances in lighting design.
Rounding out Light Canada, IES Toronto and IIDEX will be offering a CEU/LC-accredited seminar stream developed by industry experts covering all aspects of lighting design, applications, technology and case studies. The Light Canada seminar stream ensures seminar attendees are up-to-date on the latest lighting education on lighting design, engineering and technology.
The very current, highly relevant and topical sessions include “Solid State Lighting. What is Important, The Solution or The Technology,” presented by Howard Yaphe of Philips; “Fun with Lighting Controls,” presented by Avraham Mor of Lightswitch; and for those interested in outdoor lighting, “Night Light for Streets, People and History: The Heritage Lighting Master Plan for Old Town Toronto,” presented by Philip Gabriel of Gabriel Mackinnon.
