Advanced LEDs and E.ON target LED street lighting

Oct. 11, 2007
E.ON will bid for projects to install lighting schemes using LED luminaires from Advanced LEDs, which has also signed an agreement with Enfis.
Hastings Town Centre Advanced LEDs Ltd, a UK-based manufacturer of high performance LED luminaires, has signed an exclusive relationship agreement with E.ON Energy Services, a major energy supplier.

The agreement will enable E.ON to offer LED-based lighting schemes when bidding for projects under the Private Financing Initiative (PFI). In simple terms, PFI contracts enable private companies to pay for the construction costs on public projects, and then rent the finished project back to the public sector.

E.ON will have exclusive access to LED luminaires from Advanced LEDs for PFI projects. In addition, E.ON will provide R&D funding to Advanced LEDs to enable to the company to further develop its reflector-based LED luminaire technology.

Advanced LEDs says that this agreement will open up markets in street lighting and enable E.ON to be the first company to offer LED street lighting for major contracts around the world. Carl Clarke, Managing Director of Advanced LEDs Ltd said that the support of a company the size of E.ON will give the company a stronger market position.

Relationship with Enfis

Advanced LEDs Ltd also recently signed a technology partnership agreement with the LED light engine manufacturer Enfis, also based in the UK. The agreement will see Enfis supply light engines in volume quantities for Advanced LEDs' street lighting and architectural range of fittings.

Mark Hopkins, Technical Director of Advanced LEDs, said "Enfis' innovative solutions introduced into this rapidly expanding industry are helping us to overcome some of the hurdles facing the next generation of luminaire designs."

The rapid rise in efficacy from the white LED has created the need to find real lighting solutions using this new technology. Advanced LEDs Ltd says that its philosophy has been to throw away the luminare design manual and start from first principles, to manufacture a range of luminaires at the forefront of this new technology. This, says the company, is one reason why E.ON selected them for an exclusive relationship.

The current product range being manufactured by Advanced LEDs is aimed at the high power (high light output) end of the market, with a recent single installation using 1.6 kW of LED power. The company's off-the-shelf range includes floodlights up to 400 watts and road luminaires up to 120 watts.

Projects

Advanced LEDs Ltd has been involved in numerous projects including lighting the roadway to the Mayor's office in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, using 90 watt Hammerhead fittings on 8m columns.

The company has also designed and manufactured a Victorian LED lantern (scheme is lit to S2 classification) for an innovative scheme in the town centre of Hastings, UK (see photo).

Gail Lyall, Marketing Director of Advanced LEDs Ltd said, "The LED industry is moving forward at a very fast pace, and with our new technology partners we aim to keep pushing the boundaries further. We are delighted to be working with such prestigious names as E.ON and Enfis."
