Seoul's LED Expo 2005 shines in new pairing with Flat Panel Display Expo

LED Expo 2005, held from May 25-28, 2005 at KINTEX in Seoul, Korea, recorded a major jump in attendees over the previous year, according to show organizers.

The 3rd annual LED Expo was held concurrently with Flat Panel Display Expo 2005 -- the inaugural run of the latter show.

The combined trade fair drew 16,590 attendees, an increase of approximately 46% over LED Expo 2004. “The sharp increase in visitors now makes us one of the best attended lighting and display fairs in Asia,” said Mun Ok-Kyeon, director of EXPO Secretariat.

A survey conducted at the fair grounds showed that 96% of those attending LED Expo 2005 endorsed the show saying that it helped meet their goals in either introducing new products to the market or building sales for current products. Ninety-five percent of the visitors to Flat panel Display Expo 2005 voiced the same opinion of that show.

The event drew visitors from around the world. Seventy-seven percent of the international attendees were from Asia, with the largest contingent of foreign visitors coming from Japan. European and US visitors to the show accounted for about 15% of total foreign attendees.

Mun said he expects international participation to jump sharply next year with the addition again of Flat Panel Display Expo 2006 with the LED Expo. “Korea is the industry leader in flat panel display technology, “said Mun. “To see where the industry is going in 2006, this will be the place to be.”

88 exhibitors from 10 countries flocked to LED Expo 2005, while the first annual showing of the Flat Panel Display drew 43 exhibitors from 10 countries.

Complementing the action on the trade show floor was a full program of seminars tackling important issues in new product development and market applications for the LED industry. Topical speakers were recognized industry authorities from Korea, Japan, Germany, the US, and Russia.

The next edition of LED Expo and Flat panel Display Expo will be held from 17 to 20 May, 2006 at KINTEX in Korea. For more information, visit www.ledexpo.com.

South Korea creates LED Valley

Elsewhere in Korea, the City of Gwangju is embarking on a “LED Valley” project that aims to make it one of the most innovative LED production powerhouses in the world.

Backed by a budget of $100 million between 2005 and 2008, the scheme intends to create a cluster of 40 to 50 leading LED-related companies, from chip makers to system providers.
