The company's president, Takashi Matsuura, said that the brightness of the new chip is "the highest in the industry."
The LEDs will be used as backlights for liquid crystal displays (LCDs) in cellular phones, and are bright enough to illuminate the screens of car navigation systems.
The new product, named TG White II, combines an improved TG blue LED with a yellow phosphor to achieve higher luminosity. Also, the use of heat-efficient materials has extended the product's life by 50% compared with conventional devices.
The TG White II has an output of 1,000 mcd when driven at 20 mA, and measures 2.8 mm (L) x 1.2 mm (W) x 0.8 mm (H). The device has a surface-mount, side-emitting package.
The current generation TG White Hi puts out 600 mcd and measures 4.7 x 1.0 x 0.75 mm. The new product is smaller, brighter and lasts 1.5 times longer than the TG White Hi.
Toyoda Gosei intends to start shipping samples in October, and to commence mass production before the end of the year.
The company is also developing an even brighter 1,300 mcd products, which is expected to debt in March 2005.
