NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display launches its first LED-backlit LCD monitor

May 27, 2004
NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display of America, Inc., a leading vendor of flat panel desktop displays, introduced a high-end 21.3-inch UXGA LED-backlit LCD monitor at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2004 international exhibition. At a previous event in May, the company also displayed an engineering sample of a 23-inch WUXGA LED-backlit LCD monitor.
Designed to deliver a standardized color space for perfect color matching across all digital platforms and devices, the new wide gamut monitor integrates NEC's Super Advanced Super Fine TFT (SA-SFT) panel technology with LED backlight technology from Lumileds Lighting.

The display exceeds the Adobe RGB color space, the standard in the professional color processing market. The 21.3-inch LED backlit LCD will be available in Q4 2004.

The new LED backlight utilizes Luxeon DCC, an RGB light source that generates white light with an enhanced color spectrum and allows for tuning of the white point, which, when allied with a feedback sensor, ensures the display operates consistently over time.

"NEC-Mitsubishi's new breed of LCD ultra-wide color gamut displays further the range and depth of display color reproduction to ensure complete color confidence for professionals in printing, DTP and color-proofing industries that require consistency across a large color space," said Kevin Christopherson, senior product manager of NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display of America, Inc. "By meeting the needs of arguably the most demanding users, we will significantly advance the display performance so that ultimately all our customers benefit from improved color performance."

LCD technology as a display platform has become the dominant force in the market due to its superior ergonomics, reduced energy needs, space-saving and low cost of ownership benefits. The use of LED backlights is expected to help propel LCD monitors even further in the display market. With innovative light guide systems and color filters, the new display delivers a larger aperture, wider viewing angles and less color shift than its mainstream LCD display counterparts.

"NEC Mitsubishi's new 21.3-inch LED backlit LCD will set new standards for users' expectations," said Mark Pugh, VP of strategic marketing at Lumileds Lighting. "By utilizing Luxeon DCC, NEC Mitsubishi is not just delivering a new standard in color performance but a more controllable and environmentally responsible LCD display."
