Zumtobel Group companies help create one of the finest leisure facilities in the UK
Feb. 7, 2019
Zumtobel and Thorn Lighting have played a big part in creating the right ambience for the £25 million Places Leisure Eastleigh sports, health and fitness venue in Hampshire. The new centre is located next to the building of the old Fleming Park Leisure Centre and has been developed by Eastleigh Borough Council.
The state-of-the art facility, co-funded by Sport England who contributed £2 million to the scheme, will feature a giant sports hall that is believed to be the third biggest in the country that will house 15 badminton courts. An eight-lane pool has also been created on the ground floor near a learner pool with a floor depth that can be altered. The centre will also have a 150-station gym, a ballet studio, a spin studio, a crèche, a soft play area incorporating party rooms and a café with outside seats. The contract to operate the facility has been awarded to Places for People Leisure, a leading leisure and wellness partner delivering fitness, sport, health and wellbeing.
For the vast sports hall and squash courts, Zumtobel’s Craft compact LED high bay luminaires have provided the perfect solution. Sealed to IP65, Craft has a specially developed wide beam optic for uniform, square illumination with no dark areas (UGR 80 (4000 K), Ra > 70 (6500 K) and a transparent PMMA diffuser with additional safety cover. Zumtobel’s Slotlight surface, recessed and suspended versions were chosen for the dance area, gym changing rooms, corridors and main reception/entrance to provide continuity in lighting and luminaire appearance combined with a cohesive overall arrangement. Surface mounted black Slotlight luminaires have been installed to create the right mood in the dance studio.
Slotlight provides a pure, uniform and efficient light with an outstanding lighting effect offering scope for new dimensions of creative design. Room geometries can be made clear more effectively, room zones can be redefined and corner areas can be brought into sharper focus by using light. The modules are not merely connecting elements; they blend in as an integral part of the luminaire, their consistent, virtually end-to-end illumination being just as perfect as the dead straight light lines. Its standard optic achieves a light output ratio in excess of 50% and, when fitted with a Luminance Reducing Optic (LRO), this luminaire can even be used without the risk of glare.
For sustainability, Thorn’s Chalice was an obvious choice in corridors and changing rooms as an alternative conventional fluorescent downlights, reducing energy usage by up to 60 percent. Chalice is available fixed (13/26/38W) or with a replaceable LED module (Twist version), both with a choice of colour temperatures (3000 or 4000K). The Twist version allows replacement with future module generations to maximise lifetime energy savings. A lifetime of up to 50,000 hours (@L70, Ta 25 degrees C) significantly reduces maintenance demands and costs.
Novaline, a slim circular luminaire for wall or ceiling mounting, which blends with most architectural styles, was chosen for stairwells whilst Thorn’s Aquaforce IP65 rated LED luminaires are providing high quality, low energy lighting in the wet and dusty environment of the plantrooms.
The new Places Leisure Eastleigh has the feel of an exclusive private leisure facility without the price tag and it is, of course, open to the general public. Sandra Dodd, CEO of Places for People Leisure, said: “Being awarded the contract to operate Places Leisure Eastleigh for the next 20 years has given us an opportunity to showcase our brand in one of the finest leisure facilities in the UK.”
