-- NeoPac Opto launches NeoPac Universal Platform (NUP) and Standard Solid-State Light Sources for accelerating adoption of LEDs for illumination applications

NeoPac Opto, a subsidiary of NeoPac Lighting Group, today launches its revolutionary LEDs lighting platform, called NeoPac Universal Platform (NUP), along with a series of Standard LEDs light sources, called NeoPac Light Engines. Full series of NUP-based Indoor and outdoor LEDs luminairies, called NeoBulb, have been illustrated in many application sites around the world by NeoBulb Lighting.

Is current LEDs infrastructure matured for illumination applications? A sustainable technology platform along with standard LEDs light sources is necessary for the industry to healthily accelerate adopting of LEDs for illumination applications” questioned and stated by Jeffrey Chen, Chairman/CEO of NeoPac Lighting Group.

According to Chen’s explanation, the NUP and NeoPac Light Engines can completely solve the intrinsic LEDs industry problem – the Products Sustainability, and the NUP is disruptive innovation to the whole LEDs illumination industry. NeoPac had filed more than 200 patents in NUP patent portfolio.

“By launching NeoPac Universal Platform and Standard LEDs Light Sources, NeoPac wants to re-define LEDs for illumination and to build a sustainable lighting infrastructure around the value chain. And this is also part of our Global Green Lighting Mission in NeoPac Opto and NeoBulb Lighting” Jeffrey stated.

According to current technology roadmaps forecasted by LEDs chips and packages makers, the LEDs efficacy (lm/W at initial) will be continuously improving in the coming decade. Due to adopting of current existing LEDs lamps (packages) and the continuous increase of LEDs efficacy, the lighting companies have to periodically change their LEDs fixtures product versions at least every two years for keeping the same lighting effect of original luminaires design requirements.

Once the lumen output of LEDs packages for the luminaires are changed, the secondary optics and electronics (Drivers) will be also changed for fitting the same original lighting effect accordingly. Applications of safety certificates (UL, CE,…..) for any change in the LEDs luminaires should be re-conducted as well. A long time sophisticated useful life and reliability test for the new versions of LEDs luminaires will be also needed. How to keep the product models sustainable becomes a crucial issue for the whole supply chain. Without universal lighting platform and fixed LEDs light sources, products time to market and inventory will be also big issues to the LEDs Luminaires industry.

LEDs for illumination seem to be rapidly growing in some developing countries, particularly in China for government backed national-wide street lighting projects. But traditional lighting giants still hesitate to jump into this huge market since some intrinsic issues exist in the LEDs industry for real illumination applications. The problems can be concluded “Does the useful life (L70) of high power LEDs lighting Luminaires can be really lasting for a long term (>50,000 hrs) as claimed? Do lighting companies can offer a sustainable LEDs Luminaire to fitting the applications from time to time?” Can users continuously buy the same LEDs luminaires for a long period?”

“In NeoPac, we are completely solving the problem by offering NeoPac Universal Platform (NUP) and sustainable standard LEDs light sources to the industry. By adopting our fixed-maintained-lumen and form factor, 60,000 hrs useful life (L70) , system-in-package, point-like-source NeoPac Light Engines, the lighting brands will be able to make their own sustainable NUP-based luminaires easily to fit actual market needs” Jeffrey Chen said.

NeoPac Opto is going to launch its standard point-like-source NeoPac Light Engines at 500 lm, 700 lm, 1000 lm in White and 350 lm, 500 lm, 700 lm in Warm this year and adding 1400 lm in White and 1000 lm in Warm in 2010. Another 2000 lm in White and 1400 lm in Warm will be expected to launch in 2012. There will be totally 10 standard LEDs lamps with sustainable form factor (500 lm/700 lm/1000 lm/1400 lm/2000 lm in White and 350 lm/500 lm/700 lm/1000 lm/1400 lm in warm) for steadily offering to lighting industry in coming years.

If we can’t define the maintained lumen output and useful life (L70) of a lamp, we can’t call the lamp a real light bulb! This is really an intrinsic problem for current LEDs package and LEDs lighting technology platform. Even same LEDs package (lamp) adopted by different luminaire makers will result different lighting effects and different product useful life (L70). Since LEDs chips and phosphor are highly temperature-sensitive and high Tj will directly impact on optical and electrical performance of LEDs, as well as the overall quality and reliability of LEDs Luminaires. Different lighting fixture assembly process and different thermal management scheme result different LEDs junction temperature (Tj) and further result different overall lighting performance.

“Actually we are not only selling LEDs light sources in super high brightness maintain lumen but also selling the lamps with fixed and long useful life (L70) at over 60,000 hrs. In NeoPac Opto, we can precisely define our point-light-source NeoPac Light Engine with maintained lumen output as well as LEDs junction temperature (Tj) and useful life (L70) at a fixed form factor by driving the LEDs at a fixed current (530mA). Most importantly the same maintained-lumen-output lamps with fixed form factor can be steadily offering to lighting fixtures makers for a long term base and it is really easy for adopting the NUP and shorten the time-to-market” Chen stated.

“We are integrating first-level LEDs package, called NeoPac Emitter, and second-level thermal management, called NeoPac Thermal Module, together into a point-light-source lighting module, called NeoPac Light Engine. Actually, our proprietary super-low thermal resistance (Rjc) LEDs package is no longer a real package component. It is actually just a semi-product for making NeoPac Light Engines only. The NeoPac Light Engine module is a system-in-package (SIP) approach that the multi-chips (40 mil power chips), single-packaged NeoPac Emitter is tightly attached upon the flat end of a patented micro heat pipe which surrounded with an aluminum heat sink. The high-density LEDs heat is quickly pumped away from LEDs chips through the heat pipe to the dissipation heat sink and effectively deliver into surrounding air. By having excellent heat pipe based thermal management in NeoPac Light Engine, we drive the NeoPac Emitter at ultra-high-power (7 W at 500 lm, 10W at 700 lm, 14W at 1000 lm for White and 7W at 350 lm, 10W at 500 lm, 14W at 700 lm for Warm) and also keep the Tj at 60 degree C as well. The driving current for all our NeoPac Light Engines is fixed at 350mA and will be sustainable for long term on our products roadmap and most importantly the useful life (L70) test has been conducted at our lab for over 20,000 hrs” addressed by Chen..

In NeoPac Opto, there are currently three NeoPac Emitters (8 chips/6 chips/ 4 chips) with same package foot print and form factor. Combined with different size of NeoPac Thermal Module, a series of NeoPac Light Engines with 500 lm (350 lm) at 7W, 700 lm (500 lm) at 10W, 1000 lm (700 lm) at 14W standard LEDs lamps in white (warm) color and 60,000 hrs Useful Life (L70) can be figured out by driving at fixed current 530 mA.

“We define the LEDs efficacy (at maintained lumen per watt) of NeoPac Light Engines at 71.4 lm/W (maintained) for White and 50 lm/W (maintained) for Warm in 2009 and this results the said maintained-lumen output at the said power of the three standard NeoPac Light Engines.
We further define the efficacy of NeoPac Light Engines at 100 lm/W (maintained) for White and 70 lm/W (maintained) for Warm in 2010 and it will result the same form factor to deliver same lumen output as in 2009 by keeping the same driving current at 530mA. But the power of the three NeoPac Light Engines will be automatically reduced from 14W (1000 lm/700 lm) to 10W (1000 lm/700 lm), from 10W (700 lm/500 lm) to 7 W (700 lm/500 lm) and from 7W (500 lm/350 lm) to 5 W (500 lm/350 lm) since the 8 chips NeoPac Emitter will be replaced by 6 chips NeoPac Emitter for the 14 W-based NeoPac Thermal Module, the 6 chips NeoPac Emitter will be replaced by 4 chips NeoPac Emitter for the 10 W-based NeoPac Thermal Module, the 4 chips NeoPac Emitter will be replaced by a new developed single big chip (70 mil) NeoPac Emitter for the 7 W-based NeoPac Thermal Module respectively.

According to the roadmap of chips makers in 2012, we further define the efficacy of the NeoPac Light Engine at 142.8 lm/W(maintained) in White and 100 lm/W (maintained) in Warm. By fixing the NeoPac Thermal Module and shifting NeoPac Emitter as mention above, same NeoPac Light Engine form factor will be able to deliver the same maintained lumen out accordingly. Based on a fixed LEDs driving current at 530mA, even the efficacy of NeoPac Light Engines are improved from 71.4 lm/W (50 lm/W) to 100 lm/W (70 lm/W) and even up to 142.8 lm/W (100 lm/W) in coming years, the maintain lumen output will not be changed. From application point of view, the only change of the NeoPac Light Engines are more energy saving and more useful life. The maintain lumen output and form factor are always keeping at the same. It is important for developing and marketing a sustainable LEDs luminaire. For this, we call the three numbers (71.4 lm/W, 100 lm/W, 142.8 lm/W for White and 50 lm/W, 70 lm/W, 100 lm/W) the “Eigenvalues” of LEDs efficacy (maintained).” Chen stated.

Since the maintained efficacy (lm/W) is measured with the LEDs junction temperature ( Tj) at 60 degree C, the initial efficacy (Tj at 25 degree C) will be slightly higher accordingly. For example, Cree-based NeoPac Emitter (Cree’s power chips) upon NeoPac Thermal Module, the three Eigenvalues (initial efficacy) are predicted at 80.4 lm/W (initial), 108.7 lm/W (initial) and 151.3 lm/W (initial) respectively. But different chips structure causing different thermal result. Most importantly, based on NUP, different chips for NeoPac Emitters will result the same Eigenvalue and same lumen output (maintained) in NeoPac Light Engines.

From chip maker point of view, only three Eigenvalues (lm/W) in their roadmap will be made for fitting NeoPac Emitter and NeoPac Universal Platform (NUP). This is intrinsically an ‘Quantum” aspect for LED efficacy improvement. It will be also simplifying the R&D and mass production processes. Actually, the three Eigenvalues for LEDs chip makers are quite enough for fitting a variety of application needs.

In NeoPac Opto, we almost fix everything (Maintained lumen output, Package, Driver, Form Factor) for the Standard LEDs lamps. This is important for whole industry since everybody in the supply chain can fix their stuffs as long as everybody adopts NeoPac Universal Platform for LEDs illumination.

In term of Power, efficacy, lumen output (maintained), driver, optics, thermal management, useful life (L70), form factor of the lamps, NeoPac Universal Platform (NUP) can offer a sustainable solution to the lighting industry. With NeoPac Universal Platform from package level to module level to system level, some correlation fixed numbers emerged as “Magic Numbers” for opening the door to LEDs illumination!

The NeoPac Universal Platform (NUP) and NeoPac Light Engines have been successfully adopted by NeoBulb Lighting, a subsidiary of NeoPac Lighting Group. A variety of Indoor and Outdoor LEDs luminaires, called “NeoBulb” has been developed and tested at labs and fields for more than 20,000 hrs in past two and half years. NUP-based NeoBulb LEDs luminaires have been sold into many countries around the world for many lighting projects.
