Lightfair International celebrates 20th anniversary with record-breaking show

Date Announced: 27 Jul 2009

ATLANTA -- The 20th annual LIGHTFAIR® International (LFI), the world's largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference, ended with record-breaking attendee registrations of 23,416 industry professionals and conference participants.

Celebrating two decades of lighting excellence in New York, LFI 2009 offered the most robust trade show and conference in its 20-year history. LFI 2009 increased attendance by 8.5% and exhibit booths by 6% from LFI 2007 in New York.

Boasting an exhibit hall of more than 170,000 square feet, the 2009 trade show floor-the largest space in LFI's history-was sold out, featuring 476 national and international manufacturers showcasing the latest product designs and introductions, technological advances and lighting solutions in 1,643 booths.

Attendees from 73 countries and every U.S. state discovered national and international manufacturers on the trade show floor-88 of which represented countries outside of the United States. LFI 2009 also welcomed 80 first-time exhibiting companies, adding more product and innovation to the show.

LFI attendees-trade show and conference participants-came from a variety of industry disciplines and represented a broad cross-section of professions including:

Architects, Consultants, Specifiers, Facility Managers/Owners, Energy Consultants/Specialists, Landscape Architects, Visual Merchandisers and Interior & Retail Designers: 23%

Electrical Engineers & Engineers: 12%

Lighting Designers (Architectural & Theatrical): 10%

ESCO-Energy Service Company & Contractors (Electrical & General): 8%

Lighting Retailers & Distributors (Lighting & Electrical): 19%

Representatives: 14%

Others, including students and educators: 14%

This year, LFI featured three product-specific Pavilions-the Daylighting Pavilion, the Design Pavilion and the European Light + Design Pavilion-which showcased the finest in decorative designs available from European manufacturers and has evolved into the Global Light + Design Pavilion for 2010 to include more innovative products from around the world. Together, the three pavilions, along with the entire trade show floor of exhibitors, formed a dynamic offering that spotlighted unique products in numerous categories.

Additionally, the educational program, which started two days before the trade show floor opened with the Daylighting and LIGHTFAIR Institutes, offered the largest, most diverse courses and seminars to date with more than 220 hours of programming over five days. This year, 136 industry experts presented 75 sessions, addressing topics that covered lighting fundamentals, software, applications, controls and solutions, as well as design innovation, sustainability, energy-efficiency, product updates and case studies.

LFI's 20th anniversary spotlighted two spectacular keynote luncheons during the Daylighting Institute and the LIGHTFAIR Institute. Ed Begley Jr. spoke on Sunday, May 3 and James Turrell on Monday, May 4. Topics addressed during each luncheon included sustainability and light as art and inspiration. Both luncheons individually attracted a packed house of attendees.

As LFI 2009 ended, exhibitors were already preparing for 2010 during space selection for next year. To-date, the 2010 trade show floor is 82% sold.
