The Dereham Memorial Hall in Dereham, Norfolk, recently underwent a £2.6m refurbishment and reopened with its new look in December 2011. The designers successfully combined modern facilities and lighting with sensitivity to the past.

As part of the refit of the Dereham War Memorial Hall in the village of Dereham, electrical design engineers, Kevin Boast Associates, were keen to specify low energy lighting. With the fittings mounted at height on the hall’s ceiling, there was a desire to ensure a long, maintenance free, life, while the use of LED lighting would also dramatically reduce the venue’s running costs.

The technical requirement was to provide a lighting level of between 250 and 300 lux in the auditorium, using warm white LEDs that would suit the building, and still be in keeping with its past. The lights needed to be linked to the building management system, and to provide emergency lighting in the event of a mains power failure.

Earlsmann’s, UK manufactured, Grantham LED High Bay lights were specified, rated at 150 Watts and fitted with circular decorative discs. Dimming drivers were fitted to all luminaires, while the emergency provision was ensured by fitting several units with an additional emergency driver and battery backup.

Simon Thornton of Earlsmann said “The Grantham LED high bay was chosen since it provided all the functionality required in a slim package that didn’t look out of place in the building.”
