ARC Energy ships 100th furnace for LED sapphire-crystal growth

Date Announced: 12 Jul 2011

ARC Energy has shipped its 100th CHES furnace, a milestone reached thanks to a large demand by LED manufacturers located in Asia.

This is a positive announcement for the company, which is currently battling a lawsuit filed by GT Solar and involving misappropriation of trade secrets relating to sapphire crystallization processes and equipment.

Designed specifically for LED applications, ARC Energy’s CHES furnaces are “c-axis” growth furnaces that are used to produce sapphire boules.

Cores from these crystals are turned into LED wafers, and finally into the high-brightness and ultra-high-brightness LED chips that are used in LED backlighting, general lighting, and automotive and signage applications.
