Energy efficiency to drive new opportunities for lighting equipment manufacturers across all end-users, says Frost & Sullivan

LONDON – Steady growth is forecast for the European lighting equipment market across all end-user verticals. The residential segment is the largest and the fastest growing market. Retail and hospitality follow thanks to their substantial shares in more expensive decorative lighting. The market will be driven by the shift towards more intelligent and energy efficient lighting. In particular, the predicted “LED revolution” will provide significant growth opportunities for participants active in this market, thus acting as a major driver for the total lighting market.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.buildingtechnologies.frost.com), European Lighting Equipment Market: Opportunities by Vertical Application Sector, finds that the market earned revenues of $19,404.3 million in 2010 and estimates this to reach $23,914.2 million in 2017. The following verticals are covered in this study: offices, retail, hospitality and leisure, industry, education (both public and private sectors), healthcare (both public and private sectors), public outdoor, residential and others (including stadiums, military facilities and cultural sites, among others).

“The trend towards energy efficient lighting is expected to drive all vertical end-user segments,” notes Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Michael Meyer. “Promoting energy efficient and intelligent lighting technologies is no longer an option, but has become a must for participants to survive in this market, especially in the functional lighting segment.”

Although the predicted large-scale uptake of LED technology is unlikely to happen before the end of the forecast period, it has already made inroads in various applications within specific verticals. The shift towards LED will have implications for all lighting segments, requiring market participants to align not just their products, but also their supply and distribution strategies.

Accounting for 73 per cent of the total European lighting equipment market in 2010, luminaires are the largest product segment. Although it is predicted to grow at a lower rate than other product segments, the market will benefit from demand for new products compatible with more efficient light sources. Lighting controls, holding 4 per cent of the total market in 2010, are expected to increase their share due to increased awareness on energy efficiency, resulting in the emergence of smarter buildings and the integration of lighting control into building automation.

Germany, Europe’s largest economy, is also the continent’s largest market for lighting equipment. The German market is being driven by consumer awareness for energy efficiency and a high adoption rate of new technologies. The second largest market in Europe is the United Kingdom, where efforts to reduce carbon footprints have been driving sales of energy efficient lighting technologies. Efforts in energy reductions to save costs have also become a priority in Italy, where energy prices are expected to remain among the highest in Europe. While the markets for most European countries are expected to recover and generate pre-crisis level revenues by 2012-2013, Spain, being affected the maximum by the recession in the construction market, is forecast to recover only by 2015.
