Hubbell Lighting Components Introduces SpectraClean™ Technology for Effective and Continuous Disinfection

July 3, 2019

Unique Solution Automatically Treats Harmful Microorganisms Suspended in Air, Trapped on Objects and Residing on Surfaces

Greenville, SC – Hubbell Lighting Components announced today it has commercially launched a visible light disinfection solution that can be customized for lighting solutions across a range of applications. SpectraClean™ leverages developments in the disciplines of lighting science and microbiology using narrowband 405 nanometer (“nm”) visible light to providing a continuous, unobtrusive disinfection option for industrial equipment applications.

The germicidal effects of narrowband visible light suppress a wide range of bacteria, molds, fungi and yeast. The antimicrobial light from SpectraClean induces the production of damaging reactive oxygen species in harmful microorganisms to accelerate cell inactivation.

Antimicrobial disinfection through illumination is proven effective with proper dosage levels on pathogens suspended in air or attached to a variety of surfaces, materials and objects.  SpectraClean resides outside the UV spectrum and will not damage non-harmful plant and animal cells or degrade inanimate materials.

The Technology Behind SpectraClean

Hubbell Lighting, the parent company of Hubbell Lighting Components, has licensed the University of Strathclyde’s High Intensity Narrow Spectrum (“HINS”) lighting technology. There are many studies that prove the effectiveness of this technology. For example, the use of 405 nm light for environmental disinfection has undergone clinical evaluation in occupied patient isolation rooms in Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where it was used as a background lighting system to provide continuous disinfection of air and exposed surfaces in the presence of patients and staff. The results demonstrated a significantly greater reduction in levels of environmental contamination than was achievable by normal disinfection control methods alone.

How It Works

SpectraClean’s antimicrobial light induces the production of damaging reactive oxygen species in harmful microorganisms to accelerate cell inactivation. Antimicrobial disinfection through targeted illumination is proven effective with proper dosage levels on pathogens suspended in air or attached to a variety of surfaces, materials and objects. SpectraClean resides outside the UV spectrum and will not damage non-harmful plant and animal cells or degrade inanimate material

Laboratory studies have shown that a range of light wavelengths in the region of 400-425 nm can be used for bacterial inactivation, but optimal antimicrobial activity has been found at 405 nm.

How It Can Be Used

Hubbell Lighting Components will incorporate SpectraClean technology into custom lighting and control solutions tailored for specific industrial equipment applications. Examples of use include, but not limited to, ice makers and other areas of restaurants, on the assembly line and in other areas of food production facilities, in the produce section of grocery stores and generally in industrial refrigerators.

Advantages of SpectraClean Technology

SpectraClean has been designed to provide continuous environmental disinfection and complement cleaning and disinfection strategies. One of the biggest advantages of SpectraClean technology is what it doesn’t do - harm humans, materials, plants and any other items that are susceptible to harmful UV rays. Being chemical free, no harsh residues or films are introduced to the application and the technology has been proven to not accelerate spoilage or the integrity of the food.

Hubbell Lighting Components has significant expertise in developing custom lighting solutions for a wide variety of customers. It will apply industrial lighting market intelligence to incorporate SpectraClean into solutions for specific applications.
