Acuity Brands VP Cheryl English earns alumni award for illumination engineering

ATLANTA – Acuity Brands, Inc. (NYSE: AYI) announced that Cheryl English, vice president of government and industry relations, has earned a Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award (DEAA) from the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. English, a resident of Greensboro, GA and 33-year Acuity Brands Lighting employee, has joined the select ranks of more than 300 alumni who have been honored for their contributions to industry, education, research and public service since the award’s inception in 1966. A 1981 graduate with a degree in architectural engineering, Cheryl was honored for her work in the field of illumination engineering. The ceremony took place at the 50th annual DEAA banquet, hosted by the university in April. “I am tremendously honored to be included in this distinguished group of alumni,” said English. “Thanks to the training and inspiration I received at CU, I’ve been able to work at the forefront of lighting technology innovation that today is not only providing improved quality and energy efficiency, but also helping improve health and well-being by providing information for responsive, ‘smart’ buildings, streets and communities.” At Acuity Brands, English is responsible for energy and environmental policy, and collaborations with trade associations and the lighting specification community. Most recently, she has worked with the U.S. Congress and the California Energy Commission to develop legislative standards and codes for energy-efficient lighting in buildings. She serves on the boards of directors of the Illuminating Engineering Society, the Lighting Division of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, the Besal Lighting Education Fund, McClung Lighting Research Foundation and the National Institute of Building Sciences. English previously received the IES Distinguished Service Award, IES Fellow Award and IES Presidential Award for service related to lighting education, technical standards, legislative and regulatory activities and standards for controlling outdoor light pollution. She also received the NEMA Kite and Key award for outstanding contributions to the electrical industry.
