A revolutionary LED light bulb enabled by Hong Kong scientists’ inventions was unveiled at the 2014 Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn edition), the world’s second largest lighting fair and the largest autumn lighting fair in Asia on October 27th, 2014.
Utilizing airLED technology co-invented by Professor Kei May Lau of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Mr James Wang, the new generation LED light bulb requires substantially less raw materials to produce, is significantly lighter, brighter, more energy efficient and longer lasting:
- It delivers one of the best performances among existing products measured by lumens per watt: 40 watt and 60 watt equivalents using 20-30% less power than comparable LED bulbs
- Its innovative grid design uses air circulation for heat dissipation, making the light bulb cool to the touch
- The ultra-light bulb weighs less than 60 grams with significantly less raw material consumed
- Its more stable design allows a life expectancy of 30,000 hours, 15 times longer lifespan than a traditional incandescent bulb
Co-inventors Professor Lau is Chair Professor of Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and Senior Fellow, Institute for Advanced Study of HKUST, and Mr Wang, specialising in computer engineering and VLSI circuit design, was the winner of 1992 Hong Kong Industrial design award.
The airLED offerings are presented by Cledos International Limited, a Hong Kong-based LED technology and design company.
Initially targeting Europe and the Americas, Cledos International’s airLED products will be available in the North American market in the fourth quarter of 2014 and carried by several leading European DIY retailers in first quarter of 2015. airLED products are also available in Hong Kong at selected stores.
