Pittsburgh International Airport is going green with LEDs

Date Announced: 08 Jul 2010

According to Appalachian Lighting Systems, Inc (ALSI), the company was selected by the Allegheny Country Airport Authority to manufacture and deliver 1,347 new LED lighting fixtures to the airport, located 20 miles outside of Pittsburgh. ALSI will retrofit the airport’s parking garage and deck, as well as the passenger drop-off and pick-up areas with LED lighting fixtures featuring Cree XLamp LED components. The project is expected to save the authority at least $158,000 in energy costs every year. The Airport Authority is able to implement this project thanks to grant funding from PA Conservation Works and Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority.

“The green lighting project at Pittsburgh International Airport is a win-win situation because it will increase energy efficiency and decrease operating costs for the Airport Authority,” said Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato. “The LED units will also be manufactured right here in Southwestern Pennsylvania, creating jobs and helping to solidify our standing as a leader in green technology and environmental stewardship.”

David McAnally, President & CEO of ALSI, said “In echoing Mr. Onorato’s comments, we are also very proud of the fact that - as an American company – in addition to the vast percentage of the components in these innovative ALSI lighting systems being developed and manufactured here in the Commonwealth and in other parts of the U.S. , these luminaries are engineered to provide between 73 to 82 percent savings in energy costs, and last essentially maintenance free for as long as 20 years.”

Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA) Executive Director Brad Penrod stated, “We are pleased to be working with the ALSI team in this pioneering approach to airport facility lighting. The Allegheny County Airport Authority is committed to conserving energy and reducing its environmental footprint. This solution saves money, while advancing our mission of exceptional customer service in a safe and secure airport.”
