| The economic rebound in 2010 drove Taiwan's total LED production value to reach USD 5.43 billion, according to the country’s Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA).
With the continued expansion of the LED application market, the annual growth rate is predicted to be 40% in 2011, and a further 40% in 2012, reaching USD 11.3 billion (see chart).
PIDA says that the high-power LED technology of LED manufacturers in Taiwan is “approaching the technology of big LED manufacturers in the industrial countries,” meaning Japan, USA and Germany. Consequently, there has been a big improvement in both the quality of products and the sales figures.
Taiwan’s LED manufacturers have, says PIDA, “become members of the international supply chain thanks to technical know-how, lower prices and outstanding quality and have entered the high-growth application markets in backlighting and lighting.”
In 2010, says PIDA, Taiwan was the number-one-ranked country in the world in terms of the production output of LED wafers and chips, with sales of just below USD 2 billion. InGaN LEDs comprise 52% of the production value. The market for packaged LEDs was slightly less than USD 3 billion.
As the chart shows, the LED lighting segment of the industry is expected to grow rapidly in the next two years.
PIDA organizes the LED Lighting Taiwan conference, which this year will be jointly and simultaneously held with Photonics Festival in Taiwan, Display Taiwan and Solar Taiwan from June 14 to June 16 in 2011 in Nangang Exhibition Hall.
