JB Lighting joins Philips’ LED Luminaires licensing program
14 Aug 2009
JB Lighting Lichtanlagen GmbH is the latest company to take a license under Philips’ LED Luminaires and Retrofit Bulbs license program.
Based in Germany, JB Lighting Lichtanlagen GmbH is a well-known global supplier in the field of theatrical & entertainment lighting. The company’s lighting systems are implemented in TV-studios, theaters and live touring businesses. In addition, JB Lighting offers a range of lighting control consoles.

Through the license, JB Lighting obtains access to basic driver and control technologies for LED luminaires and retrofit bulbs.

Jürgen Braungardt, Director of JB Lighting Lichtanlagen, said “At JB Lighting we are active in R&D as well, and we believe that intellectual property is the basis for a company’s continuing development and therefore must be recognized. We are pleased about the agreement with Philips and the access to a comprehensive patent portfolio, which opens up new opportunities for us as a leading company in the development of LED-based moving lights.”

Frank Bistervels, Senior Director Licensing, Philips Intellectual Property & Standards, said “Philips is making its patented technologies available to the lighting industry in order to stimulate the solid-state lighting market. We are very pleased that JB Lighting joins our licensing program which contributes to a further growth of the LED industry.”

Philips’ licensing program offers access to many LED-luminaire related inventions of Philips to simplify the use of LED technologies by third parties.

Announced on 30 June 2008 (see News), the Philips patent licensing program covers LED-based luminaires and retrofit bulbs used in the general illumination, architectural and theatrical markets. The new program extends the former Color Kinetics licensing program to enable faster growth of the SSL market.

Philips announced major licensing deals with rival lighting manufacturers Osram and Zumtobel in September 2008 and May 2009, respectively.

In June 2009, American DJ and Traxon Technologies (an Osram company) joined the program.
