Osram wins LED patent dispute with Kingbright
01 Nov 2007
Osram says it has been successful in a patent dispute in Germany against Kingbright, a rival Taiwan-based LED maker.
The District Court of Düsseldorf, Germany has upheld several claims by Osram Opto Semiconductors in its patent dispute with the Taiwanese LED manufacturer Kingbright.

The court ruled that in three instances Kingbright had infringed Osram's basic patent and utility model rights. The IP in question relates to white LEDs.

The court reserved its decision on a patent for the technology for LED packages. As expected, Kingbright has filed an appeal against the initial judgment.

In accordance with the judgment, Kingbright may no longer sell some of its LED products in Germany, and must also destroy its stocks of these products currently in Germany.

Rüdiger Müller, CEO of Osram Opto Semiconductors, said "Behind our Osram patents and utility models lies the knowledge of our company and of our employees, and also a great deal of time and money."

Mueller also said that Osram recently filed a lawsuit against Kingbright for the infringement of a patent for white LEDs in China, where Kingbright manufactures LEDs.
