Funded by the DOE's SSL program, Cree's Santa Barbara Technology Center demonstrated white LEDs with efficacies as high as 74 lumens per watt, and also developed a compact 1000-lumen LED lamp capable of dissipating 20 watts of heat (see SSL program website).
