STIC, part of the National Science Council in Taiwan, has forecast that the number of LEDs used in mobile phone handsets will grow from 5.2 billion units in 2003 to more than 9.4 billion units in 2006.
Also, the average number of LEDs per phone should increase from about 10 to 12 in the same time period.
An entry-level phone with a non-color screen and a simple design usually has an average of 9-10 LEDs, said STIC. These might consist of 1 indicator light, 2-3 LEDs for the LCD backlight, and 6 for the keypad.
High-end models, with a color screen, a camera and a clamshell design typically have 3 indicator lights, 5-6 LEDs for the LCD screen, 10 for the keypad and 1 for the camera flash. |
