MDM-Light designs 'paper plane' LED luminaire

July 9, 2015
The LED luminaire "Paper Plane" is the realization of a child's dream.

Working on some projects, design studios and architectural offices often need to create original lighting systems. This in turn requires close cooperation with lighting designers and lighting companies. The fruit of partnerships of that kind has become an unusual model of LED luminaire, called Paper Plane.

This art object was created by MDM-Light as a variant of the lighting system for the largest Eastern Europe shopping center, Aviapark, on Khodynka Field in Moscow.

Previously this field housed the first Moscow airport. So from the very beginning of the development of the project, the task was given to work out a lighting solution that mimics paper airplanes.

Just in a couple of months, the project has passed all stages from sketch to detailed study and field samples. The solution included the establishment of the groups of LED luminaires in the form of tracks and "swarms" - randomly distributed under the atrium's ceiling these were functional LED luminaires and RGB lights.

The Paper Plane LED luminaire model has achieved so much success that it has been put into serial production. For the first time Paper Plane was presented at Moscow Design Week in the Design Center "Artplay" in October 2014. Anna Masello, representative of the Italian holding company Margraf, did not hide her emotions: "The first thing that occurred to me when looking at these planes, is Wow!."

Today, this designer LED luminaire can be seen in a number of private interiors, in the supermarket Azbuka vkusa - category "Kid-friendly," and opened in March 2015 in the Moscow Central Children's Store, and so on. This elegant model brings lightness to any interior and introduces a playful element.
Despite the apparent "toylike appearance," the LED luminaire is functional: it provides a comfortable soft light. The RGB modification with remote control can turn lighting into an exciting game. You can control RGB-backlit planes as a separate "airplane" or the whole group.

The body lamp diffuser is made of impact-resistant and light-scattering plastic. The model is equipped with an LED source, a driver, a cable and a set of hangers.
