Designer Jan Flook launches Bloom decorative pendant light

March 17, 2015

Jan Flook is an award-winning industrial designer based in Melbourne, Australia, who trained in Florence, Milan and New Zealand. His name, which rhymes with ‘Look!’ is well known and respected in the Australian design community.

2015 sees the launch of a striking decorative pendant named BLOOM the first launch from the collection: a rounded powder-coated white aluminium shade with yellow silk orchids cascading from the interior. The tapering two-tiered form bounces the light around the interior of the shade, creating a powerful downward focus of light, ideal for hotel lobby desks or café counters. Flook’s collection also includes chandeliers, industrial-style wall lights and pendants, dramatic feature lights and quirky one-offs made from recycled materials. They have been designed and tested with forward orders during the past 18 months. “I’m very excited to launch my collection internationally, and hope they will connect with people who, like me, are passionate about the new.” A UK-born New Zealander, Jan Flook set up his studio in Victoria in 2008 after four years in the Alpha Romeo and Design Continuum teams in Milan. Since then, Flook has been working with a range of distinguished architects, interior designers and private clients on bespoke feature lights for projects such as Melbourne’s fashionable Atlantic restaurant. "We have collaborated with Jan Flook on a number of projects,” said Conrad Manolidis, director of Blackmilk who designed the interior. “His accuracy during the design and manufacturing process make him a great choice for important projects like Atlantic." Flook has won scholarships and awards in Australia, Japan and Italy, the Pratt Foundation award, the Art in Public Spaces Award, the Distinguished Furniture Award and the International Luminaire Design Award. He also represented New Zealand in the United Nations Recycling Symposium in Paris. Further pieces from the Collection will be launched in the coming months. Flook’s aim for the future is to use his knowledge of both modern and historic lighting to create truly spectacular artistic works that surprise and delight. His love of design is infectious. “What I value most is the opportunity to keep on researching and experimenting!”
