InterLED and Earlsmann install sensor-driven LED lighting in car parks to optimize light and reduce energy usage

Feb. 12, 2015
For car parks that are open 24 hours a day, effective lighting is essential to create a safe, secure environment for users. LEDs are the ideal solution – providing bright, uniform light and delivering significant energy savings. LED manufacturer Earlsmann has recently worked with specialist LED consultant, InterLED, to install new lighting at car parks in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.
Achieving 75% savings from the switch to LED
The car park owner required the new lighting to deliver significant reductions in energy and maintenance costs. InterLED designed a lighting scheme that replaced the existing lighting with LED units, enhanced by the use of sensors and emergency packs. InterLED selected the Bedford LED amenity light from Earlsmann due to the unit’s ability to offer high-quality light and dynamic dimming through intelligent sensor technology. The newly installed lighting is now providing savings of almost 75% in overall running costs.

Using dynamic dimming to optimise light and maximise savings
The light level of the Bedford units was pre-set at 20%, with in-built microwave sensors used to detect movement and bring up to full brightness when the car park is in use. The reduced ‘standby’ light level provides increased savings and decreases the impact of the lighting on surrounding areas. In line with the client’s requirements, Earlsmann was able to increase the brightness of its standard Bedford lamp to provide a one-for-one replacement of the existing 150W metal halide fixtures.

The sensors were built into the Bedford luminaire, and some also incorporated an integral emergency pack to provide contingency lighting. The new lighting provides the same level of light users were accustomed to, with improved colour rendering and definition due to the whiter colour of the light – discouraging vandalism and therefore creating a more secure environment for vehicles.

Working as ‘one team’ to meet client requirements
Earlsmann worked closely with InterLED throughout the design stage to ensure the client was happy with the end result. Mick Baines, Director at InterLED, has selected the Bedford as its standard offering for car park lighting and has been “impressed with the output from the Bedford light and the ongoing support provided by Earlsmann”.

When the existing housing is in good condition, Earlsmann’s Bedford gear tray is also available without the housing. This option simplifies the installation process, therefore keeping costs to a minimum. InterLED is currently testing this product on another project with a view to offering it to clients in the near future.
