TUV Rheinland offers ENEC, ENEC+ Mark certifications to lighting and component manufacturers

Lighting products, components exported to EU gain competitive edge with third-party certification

Boxborough, Mass. – TÜV Rheinland, a global testing, inspection, and certification organization, recommends that lighting products and component manufacturers who export to the European Union (EU) consider the benefits of the ENEC and new ENEC+ mark certifications. The voluntary marks signify that an independent laboratory assessed a product to applicable safety and performance requirements, increasing the confidence of the customer, retailer and local authority in the product. Manufacturers of fixed and portable general-purpose luminaires, recessed luminaires, road and street lighting, floodlights, LED modules for general lighting, self-ballasted lamps for general lighting services as well as manufacturers of associated components such as transformers, information technology equipment and controls can all benefit from the ENEC certification scheme. Unlike the mandatory CE Mark, representing a self-declaration from the manufacturer or importer that the product complies with applicable regulatory requirements of the European Directives, the ENEC and new ENEC+ marks involve third-party testing and certification, annual and ongoing factory inspections and market surveillance. While the ENEC mark has validated safety claims for more than 20 years, ENEC+ has been developed to support the advancement in the LED technology and address, verify and validate the long-term performance and benefits claims. ENEC+ is based on an evolution model, so as the technology progresses, the requirements of the mark will evolve simultaneously. It is available for both manufacturers of LED and traditional lighting sources seeking to highlight performance claims. To be eligible for the ENEC+ certification, a product must be first ENEC certified. “The ENEC certification scheme is a way for manufacturers to increase product acceptance and demand; for importers and retailers to assure that their products are completely safe and perform as promised; and for customers to make purchases with confidence,” said Sagar Patel, LED and Lighting Program Manager at TÜV Rheinland. “This is particularly important to LED component and fixture manufacturers because the industry is in the stage where it must prove the new technology can be trusted to gain market-wide acceptance.” ENEC approved testing laboratories meet stringent initial and ongoing assessment requirements. The testing can only be performed in the EU, and TUV Rheinland North America can arrange for lighting products to be tested to the ENEC and ENEC+ certification scheme in the company’s laboratories in Germany and Hungary.
