Plessey presents solid-state lighting products in collaboration with Zeta Specialist Lighting

Nov. 25, 2014
Plymouth, ENGLAND -- Plessey presented the results of its partnership with Zeta Specialist Lighting to visitors at LuxLive, which took place at ExCel London, 19th-20th November. At its LuxLive booth, Plessey showcased Zeta’s ZD LED Bulkhead, a new solid-state lighting product based on Plessey pioneering GaN-on-Si MaGICTM LED die, made at the firm’s state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing facility in Plymouth. The Zeta ZD LED Bulkhead eliminates point source glare and solves any heating issues associated with LED lighting in an IP rated housing. It also offers higher efficiency; leading to longer lamp life and dramatically reduced maintenance and energy consumption costs.
This combined innovation is the result of a three-year collaboration between Zeta Specialist Lighting, the Bicester-based developer and manufacturer of award winning LED and solar powered lighting systems and Plessey, following Zeta securing grant approval from the UK Government under the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI) in 2013. Zeta Specialist Lighting designs, develops and manufactures intelligent, robust and reliable engineered products suited to a wide range of applications. From LED solutions that lower energy bills and carbon emissions for customers across the world, including custom luminaires for street lighting, amenity lighting, signage and LED commercial lighting solutions; to the design and manufacture of complete solar lighting solutions. Zeta’s Managing Director, Phil Shadbolt, said, “We are very excited about this partnership which will result in the availability of more advanced, UK-manufactured LED technology becoming available. As the lead partner in the project, we have invested heavily in plant and machinery, test equipment and staff, and the imminent launch of the Zeta ZD LED Bulkhead with Plessey’s GaN-on-Si MaGIC LEDs is the first of many new lighting innovations. Working in partnership, it is our aim to incorporate Plessey die into as many Zeta products as possible in the future.” David Owen, Plessey’s Marketing Director said, “Plessey is pleased to be working closely with a company such as Zeta here in the UK. Zeta has an excellent reputation for high quality and innovation and has won several awards for its lighting products. Recent performance improvements in the efficacy of our LEDs have enabled Plessey’s GaN-on-Silicon MaGIC LEDs to be competitive with any LED technology. Plessey’s technology has already shown how we can overcome what up to now has been a significant cost barrier in large-scale LED illumination; as a result we are seeing our LEDs being used in exciting new product developments, like the Zeta ZD LED Bulkhead”. Plessey’s MaGIC™ (Manufactured on GaN-on-Si I/C) High Brightness LED (HBLED) technology has won numerous awards for its innovation and ability to cut the cost of LED lighting by using standard silicon manufacturing techniques. Plessey Plessey is a leading expert in the development and manufacture of semiconductor products used in sensing, measurement and control applications. Plessey's products are found in a wide range of markets including communications, manufacturing, medical, defence and aerospace. Plessey designs products for high performance applications and its range of integrated products includes CMOS image sensors, low and mid-power LEDs, Hall Effect devices and its award-winning EPIC electric potential sensors. Using its understanding of electronics and expertise in micro-electronic product design and manufacture, Plessey is radically enhancing the human experience with micro-electronics solutions such that people achieve more than they thought possible.
