UL can help accelerate your in-house testing for Energy Star

Dec. 5, 2011
Date Announced: 05 Dec 2011 As an EPA-recognized Certification Body, UL can help accelerate your in-house testing for ENERGY STAR®. The following option will enable manufacturers to accelerate their ability to perform testing in-house for ENERGY STAR®, allowing them to bring products to market more quickly, while they are waiting to complete proficiency testing under NIST requirements. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is providing an option to facilitate recognition of lighting laboratories participating in a certification body (CB)’s W/SMTL program and required to complete proficiency testing (PT) for IES LM-79-08 (LM-79) per Directive 2011-03, "Proficiency Testing and Inter-Laboratory Comparison Testing Requirements for Lighting Laboratories." Due to the time needed to complete proficiency testing, EPA will recognize lighting laboratories that meet all other requirements of the CB’s W/SMTL program including evaluation for all relevant requirements of ISO/IEC 17025 and the applicable test method (LM-79) so long as the following conditions are met:1. The laboratory has registered with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and complies with NIST requirements in an expeditious manner; and2. The laboratory has successfully completed correlation testing with results that are within four percent (4%) of an EPA-recognized laboratory that has successfully completed the NIST PT program. The correlation testing data will be considered valid for six months per testing round completed, up to three rounds (18 months total) until the laboratory fully completes the NIST PT program. As an EPA-recognized Certification Body, UL can help accelerate your in-house testing for ENERGY STAR®.
