Seoul Semiconductor, the South Korea-based LED manufacturer, has issued a press release in response to last week’s story in LEDs Magazine, which described the Philips LED patent lawsuit filed against Seoul Semiconductor.
Seoul Semiconductor’s press release says that it has initiated two actions against Philips, asserting claims of patent infringement by Philips. The first action was filed in Germany in March and the second was filed in Korea in May.
Seoul also says that it intends to “vigorously defend the US patent infringement action brought by Philips” which it says is limited to “a handful of Seoul Semiconductor products.”
Seoul Semiconductor also says that it “respects the intellectual property rights of others and believes that its products do not infringe Philips’ patents.”
No mention was made of Philips’ assertion that a key Seoul Semiconductor patent should be declared invalid.
ilumisys and Altair receive four new LED-related patents
LED lighting manufacturer ilumisys, Inc. and its parent company Altair Engineering have been issued four new US patents. These add to ilumisys' patent portfolio for the replacement of fluorescent tubes with LED lamps.
The US patents are: no. 7,815,338 "LED Lighting Unit Including Elongated Heat Sink and Elongated Lens"; no. 7,926,975 "Light Distribution Using a Light Emitting Diode Assembly"; no. 7,938,562 "Lighting Including Integral Communication Apparatus"; and no. 7,946,729 "Fluorescent Tube Replacement Having Longitudinally Oriented LEDs."
"These new patents are exciting, both for ilumisys and for our licensees," said Dave Simon, president of ilumisys. "We look forward to the further extensions of our intellectual property through the company's research and development efforts, and to moving many of these innovations into high-volume production."
Samsung and Evident sign LED patent agreement
Evident Technologies, Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd have entered into a comprehensive patent licensing and purchasing agreement for Evident's quantum dot LED technology.
The agreement grants Samsung worldwide access to Evident's patent portfolio for all products related to quantum-dot LEDs from manufacturing of the quantum-dot nanomaterials to final LED production.
