Osram licenses white LED technology to PerkinElmer

Osram has granted a license, in return for an appropriate fee, to PerkinElmer Inc., the US-based supplier of precision and photonic components. The deal gives PerkinElmer the right to use Osram's property rights relating to the production of white LEDs using conversion technology.

The patented technology enables white LEDs to be produced using blue-emitting chips based on indium-gallium nitride (InGaN) and suitable phosphor converters.

“Securing this important license allows PerkinElmer to add white LEDs to its range of current and future LED offerings,” said Michael Kramer, Managing Director LED Solutions for PerkinElmer.

“We look forward to innovating with these ‘green’ environmentally-efficient white LED technologies in our continued efforts to provide the most advanced lighting solutions to the medical lighting industry, as well as other markets including architectural lighting, decorative and mood lighting.”

PerkinElmer plans to incorporate white LEDs into its ACULED® platform based on chip-on-board (COB) technology. This will result in an expanded LED portfolio which includes high power, high efficiency standard white LED products under the brand name ACULED VHLTM (Very High Lumen) as well as custom combinations that include white chips under the ACULED DYOTM (design-your-own) brand name.

Commenting on the licensing deal, Rüdiger Müller, CEO at Osram Opto Semiconductors, said: “Over the years Osram Opto Semiconductors has built up an extremely strong patent position. This provides the basis for our strong position on the market. We are pleased that another prominent company will be using our technology under this latest license agreement – that speaks for the quality of our work.”

Osram has signed numerous license agreements with a variety of companies including Rohm, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Citizen and Seoul Semiconductor.
